Motherhood Is Political: Why Mothers Need to Gather

If you’ve never thought of Motherhood as political, perhaps yesterday was a wake-up call.

Two of the top national news stories yesterday:

1. The fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis
As many of you likely know, the woman killed has been described by family and community members as a devoted mother, a poet, a writer, a wife, and someone with no known criminal history. And of note: she’s a white woman ( (have you seen this outcry from @mamacomesfirst ??).

2. RFK’s newly released dietary guidelines
Framed as “an historic reset” meant to address chronic disease through simpler, nutrient-dense eating. And yet, alongside this so-called reset we’re witnessing extreme pullbacks in health research funding, reduced vaccine recommendations, and a glaring lack of support for families who are already struggling.

Will SNAP benefits increase so families can afford to eat this way?
Will public schools receive funding to overhaul lunches they already can’t afford?

As a mother myself, I’m asking (perhaps into the void): what is more motherly than being ALIVE and able to feed our children?

I am grieving and raging like many of you. And also feeling hopeless and helpless like many of you.

If there were ever a time to gather - THIS.IS.IT!

This is the time for us to come together as mothers, as Matriarchs. To share our collective grief along with our collective strength to bolster our sisters beside us. To share our compassion and our love with one another.

Will Circling fix the world’s problems? No.

But is gathering with fellow mothers, speaking our truths, and putting our arms around each other an act of resistance and power?

YES! 300+ years ago this would have been considered witchcraft.

In my 9+ years of being a mother, one of the best skills I’ve honed is channeling my rage into something tangible and positive. Let’s channel our rage, grief, sadness, hopelessness, and helplessness together.

Now is the time.
